The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA) has announced changes in its Foundation leadership. Michael R. Mayton has been appointed as the new Chair of the AMFA Foundation, succeeding Warren Stephens, who resigned from the position. Alongside this change, Larry Middleton, Mary Ritchey, and Miles Stephens have joined the AMFA Foundation as Directors. Harriet Stephens and Warren Stephens have been honored with the title of AMFA Foundation Director Emeritus.
Warren Stephens commented on their departure: “Harriet and I are honored to have served the Museum in many different leadership capacities over the years. With the transformation and opening of the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts building and grounds, we are confident that AMFA has a bright future that will continue to educate and inspire all Arkansans and visitors to our state.”
The couple played significant roles in supporting AMFA for over four decades, notably leading a capital campaign that raised $176.6 million for constructing and opening the new museum facilities. Their contributions were recognized in 2005 with the Winthrop Rockefeller Memorial Award.
Harriet Stephens expressed confidence in Mayton's appointment: “Warren and I are delighted the Directors appointed Mike Mayton as the incoming Chair of the Foundation.” She highlighted his dedication during his tenure on various committees within AMFA.
Mayton stated his vision for his new role: “AMFA has a special role in our community and state... I look forward to continuing to serve on the AMFA Foundation and now as Chair in support of the Museum’s mission.”
The AMFA Foundation oversees a collection of 14,000 works of art, managing investments for ongoing operations, growth, acquisitions, and care of collections.
Michael R. Mayton is an experienced legal professional with extensive involvement in cultural organizations. He serves on several boards including those related to music orchestras both locally and nationally.
Larry Middleton brings financial expertise from his career at Merrill Lynch and Stephens Inc., while Mary Ritchey offers experience from her work with visual arts collaborations. Miles Stephens holds executive roles at Stephens Inc., adding further financial acumen to the board.
Founded in 1937, AMFA stands as Arkansas' largest cultural institution providing diverse arts experiences through its extensive permanent collection, temporary exhibitions, children’s theatre programs, Windgate Art School activities, and educational outreach efforts within Little Rock's MacArthur Park.
