U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar has voiced her concerns regarding the recent announcement by President Trump to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China. Klobuchar, who serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry, expressed that these tariffs could negatively impact American families and the agricultural sector.

“These tariffs will only make it harder for American families to put food on the table and for American farmers and ranchers to sell their products," she stated. She further warned that gas prices might increase by as much as 50 cents per gallon, car prices could rise by up to $3,000, and essential inputs like potash fertilizer may see a price hike of up to $25 a ton.

Klobuchar emphasized that farmers and ranchers are seeking fair competition rather than relying on government assistance prompted by trade conflicts. “Farmers and ranchers want an even playing field, not handouts necessitated by another Trump trade war," she added.

While Klobuchar acknowledged the necessity of targeted tariffs against countries accused of unfair practices such as China, she criticized the broad application of these measures. “I support targeted tariffs to combat cheating by countries like China. But these haphazard tariffs will set our country back," she remarked.

She also highlighted that President Trump had previously negotiated the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) and urged him to enforce this agreement instead of imposing additional costs on families and threatening market access for farmers and ranchers.
