House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill has criticized Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) Director Rohit Chopra following the finalization of a rule to remove medical debt from credit reports. Hill's statement comes after the CFPB's decision, which he describes as an "eleventh-hour effort to appease the White House."
Hill expressed concerns about the implications of this regulatory change, stating that it represents "another example in a long line of poor decision-making under his leadership." He warned that the move could increase costs for Americans seeking medical care and negatively affect access to healthcare, especially in rural areas.
The chairman also noted that both he and Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott had instructed federal agencies, including the CFPB, to halt all rulemaking activities following the election. Hill emphasized his intention to collaborate with the incoming Trump Administration to address what he considers a misguided action by the CFPB.
