U.S. Senator John Boozman of Arkansas is actively participating in the Veterans History Project, a Library of Congress initiative that collects and preserves veterans' oral histories. Celebrating its 25th year, Boozman's office has trained over 1,200 people in Arkansas and conducted over 100 interviews with veterans. His latest recognition in this project highlights the service of Debra Holmes, a U.S. Army veteran from Northwest Arkansas.

Holmes, who grew up near the Boeing Aircraft runway in Derby, Kansas, had a strong interest in aviation. Influenced by her family's history of military service, she aspired to serve her country. In 1974, she enlisted in the Army to pursue a path in air traffic control, a field recently opened to women beyond the traditional administrative and nursing roles.

Holmes underwent basic training at Fort Jackson and further refined her skills at Fort Rucker. Her career included a posting at Fort Bragg, and later she was reassigned to Yongsan, South Korea. Despite initial challenges and unexpected hostility on returning to the United States, Holmes found a sense of fulfillment through her military service and later built a career in technology and became a hospice chaplain.

Holmes shared how her experiences in her various assignments, particularly in South Korea, enriched her life. Reflecting on her time in uniform, she expressed gratitude for the opportunities and adventures it brought.

Senator Boozman commended Holmes, stating: "I’m grateful for Debra Holmes’ dedication and service to our nation. Her time in uniform serves as a reminder of the adversity women faced on their path to military success and the responsibility we have to honor our commitment to support the men and women who answered the call to serve. I’m honored to collect and preserve her memories."

Several activities are planned to mark the Veterans History Project's anniversary, including an interview event on April 30 at the Fort Chaffee Barbershop and Military Museum. For more information, interested individuals can contact Kathy Watson at Boozman's Fort Smith office.
