Arkansas faces a shortage of healthcare providers with a rate of 224 doctors per 100,000 people, which is 72 fewer than the national average. Half a million residents live in areas defined by the federal government as lacking an adequate number of health professionals. The pressing need for more healthcare providers is highlighted by the fact that about a third of the state's physicians are over 60 and nearing retirement.
Efforts to expand the availability of Graduate Medical Education (GME) in rural and underserved communities are in progress. Federal efforts to increase the number of medical residency positions in the state are vital for preparing future doctors and ensuring access to quality healthcare. A federal cap on medical residency slots has stood as a barrier since 1997. However, efforts within both the Arkansas state legislature and among stakeholders have created the opportunity for more residency slots, particularly in northwest and south Arkansas communities.
State investment includes a $20 million commitment for new residency positions at hospitals and clinics. Prospective providers have already taken part in "Match Day," revealing positive residency match outcomes for 2025.
At the federal level, Senator John Boozman, alongside Senator Jacky Rosen, has introduced the Resident Education Deferred Interest (REDI) Act to alleviate financial burdens on medical professionals in training. This bipartisan legislation would halt student loan interest accrual and principal repayment obligations during residencies or internships. Boozman and Rosen also authored the Physicians for Underserved Areas Act, aiming to increase medical residency spots where physician shortages are most acute.
Efforts to encourage medical careers and reduce financial barriers remain crucial. Boozman expressed optimism for continued progress, stating, "I look forward to building more momentum with great partners here and my colleagues on Capitol Hill."
