When people consider the role of a U.S. Senator, they often think of activities in Washington like hearings and debates. However, understanding constituents' needs at home is also crucial for lawmakers before making decisions on legislation.

This year, one senator's office assisted over 2,700 Arkansans with federal agency issues ranging from emergency passports to veterans' backpay. "That process is best seen in the calls and emails I get every day from Arkansans who need help with a federal agency," the senator noted.

The insights gained from these interactions guide budget decisions and highlight programs needing oversight or reform. The senator expressed gratitude for the trust constituents place in their office during times of need.

In 2024, 68 percent of assistance requests were related to military and veterans’ issues. The senator's staff helped former servicemembers access healthcare options, check VA loan statuses, and obtain overdue military records and medals. They also swiftly addressed burial paperwork issues for veterans as a final act of respect.

Having grown up in a military family, the senator takes pride in assisting veterans and their families but acknowledges that many other Arkansans also require help navigating federal agencies.

Compared to recent years dominated by COVID-19-related cases, this year's support requests resembled those from 2019 with a focus on veterans’ issues, Social Security, and IRS questions. "I am happy to report that the trends in my office this year indicate the end of those complications," stated the senator.

Former Congressman John Paul Hammerschmidt once advised that post-election there are no party lines—only people needing care. The senator appreciates constituent engagement and looks forward to continuing efforts to improve government efficiency for all Americans in 2025.
