Rep. French Hill has reintroduced the Flatside Wilderness Additions Act, which proposes to expand the Flatside Wilderness area by 2,215 acres of U.S. Forest Service land. This follows a previous expansion in 2019, when Rep. Hill's original bill added over 600 acres under the Flatside Wilderness Enhancement Act.
"As a ninth-generation Arkansan and a lifelong outdoorsman, I believe that all Arkansans should have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty of our state," stated Rep. Hill. He emphasized his commitment to completing the expansion with this new legislation, adding that it will provide more opportunities for outdoor recreation and boost the state's economy.
The proposed addition is located within Perry County, Arkansas, part of the Ouachita National Forest and within Rep. Hill's Second Congressional District. The U.S. Forest Service conducted an extensive study on potential additions to Flatside Wilderness and released their findings in May 2021.
The bill has garnered support from several local and state entities, including Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Pulaski County Judge Barry Hyde, Perry County Judge Larry Blackmon, and organizations such as the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and The National Wildlife Federation.
