Rep. French Hill, along with House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, Rep. Rich McCormick, and Rep. Tom McClintock, have issued a statement regarding the release of U.S. citizen Tigran Gambaryan from detention in Nigeria.

Gambaryan had been held by Nigerian authorities since February 2024. The representatives expressed their satisfaction at his release but criticized the conditions of his detention.

"While long overdue, we are extremely pleased that Tigran Gambaryan has finally been released from his unjust detention by the Government of Nigeria," they stated. They further noted that during his time in custody, Gambaryan faced "routine violations of his rights of due process," including limited access to legal counsel and consular support as well as inadequate healthcare.

The representatives condemned the treatment Gambaryan received while detained and extended their sympathies to him and his family: "This treatment of an upstanding American citizen is wholly unacceptable. Our hearts go out to Tigran and his family, and we hope for an expeditious recovery from this shameful ordeal."
