U.S. Senators John Boozman, Tim Scott, and Jacky Rosen have introduced the Antisemitism Awareness Act, which seeks to guide the U.S. Department of Education in addressing antisemitic incidents on college campuses. The proposed legislation instructs the department to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of antisemitism when investigating such acts.
Senator Boozman emphasized the urgency of this measure following increased antisemitic incidents after Hamas' attack on Israel. He stated, "Disturbing acts of antisemitism and violence increased on college campuses in the wake of Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel, it is more important than ever for universities to fulfill their responsibility to provide students with a safe learning environment."
Senator Scott echoed these concerns, highlighting recent events: "In the continued aftermath of the October 7th attacks on Israel by Hamas and Iran, we have seen college campuses across our nation become hotbeds of antisemitism where Jewish students’ rights are being threatened."
Senator Rosen underscored Congress's duty to combat rising antisemitism: "Antisemitism is on the rise across the nation, particularly on college campuses, and Congress has a responsibility to do everything in its power to fight back against this hate."
The bill has garnered support from numerous senators across party lines and is endorsed by several organizations including the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and Christians for United Israel Action Fund.
Stephanie Hausner from the Conference of Presidents urged quick legislative action: “Since Hamas’s October 7th attack on Israel, there has been a dramatic increase in antisemitism on college campuses." Sandra Hagee Parker highlighted its importance for campus safety: “Advancing this legislation is important in making American campuses safe and welcoming for all.”
Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League noted that their data shows crisis levels of antisemitism in America. Ted Deutch from the American Jewish Committee pointed out widespread unfamiliarity with what constitutes antisemitism among Americans.
Karen Paikin Barall from Jewish Federations stressed that Congress must act promptly: “This bill provides a clear framework for identifying antisemitism."
Companion legislation is being led by Congressmen Mike Lawler and Josh Gottheimer in the House.
