U.S. Senator John Boozman, along with Senators Todd Young and Mark Warner, has introduced a bipartisan resolution to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. This significant World War II battle in the Pacific theater began on February 19, 1945, and continued until March 26, 1945.
Senator Boozman stated, "The 80th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima is a solemn yet important reminder of the sacrifice of the Greatest Generation." He emphasized the courage displayed by U.S. Marines during this time and highlighted the ongoing importance of remembering their heroism.
Senator Young remarked on Iwo Jima's symbolism for duty and sacrifice among Marines and Americans. "I’m proud to lead this resolution that recognizes the heroic servicemembers who gave their lives at Iwo Jima," he said.
Senator Warner added personal significance to his support for the resolution, noting his late father’s service in the battle. "The 80th anniversary... offers us an opportunity to reflect on the bravery and perseverance of the Greatest Generation," Warner commented.
The resolution aims to honor various military personnel involved in Iwo Jima, remember those who died there, commemorate significant events such as raising the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945, encourage Americans to honor veterans from this battle, and reaffirm U.S.-Japan relations developed over eight decades.
The initiative has garnered cosponsorship from several senators across party lines including Richard Blumenthal, Dan Sullivan, Chris Coons, Catherine Cortez Masto, Kevin Cramer, Ruben Gallego, Ted Cruz, Tim Kaine among others.
