March marks Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, a time to acknowledge the efforts of agencies and nonprofits supporting individuals with developmental challenges. In Arkansas, the Department of Human Services will host its annual recognition on March 12th.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that about one in six children have a developmental disability. These conditions include Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, and some speech, learning, and psychological impairments.

Arkansas offers various resources to assist children and adults with developmental disabilities. Community-based programs support individuals living at home or in specialized settings, while Human Development Centers provide structured environments for those who need them.

"I am especially proud of our sheltered workshops that provide meaningful job training and work opportunities for people with developmental disabilities," said an official. The official also noted their collaboration with Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) to oppose a U.S. Department of Labor initiative to abolish the 14(c) program. This program allows individuals facing difficulties in traditional work environments to learn new skills and perform meaningful work.

Policies supporting individuals with disabilities aim to help them achieve independence. The use of ABLE saving accounts is one such measure. "I’ve long supported the use of ABLE saving accounts to help address this problem," said the official, referring to financial planning challenges faced by citizens with disabilities.

In partnership with Senators Eric Schmitt (R-MO) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), the official introduced the Ensuring Nationwide Access to Better Life Experience Act (ENABLE) Act. This bipartisan legislation seeks to make provisions related to ABLE accounts permanent, allowing Americans with disabilities and their families to save tax-free without losing eligibility for federal programs like Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income.

"This month celebrates awareness for a reason," remarked the official, emphasizing the importance of visibility for people with developmental disabilities who may seem invisible due to societal barriers.

Arkansans are encouraged to recognize these efforts as part of a broader commitment to ensuring dignity and opportunity for all individuals.
