U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairman John Boozman recently addressed a hearing titled “Perspectives from the Field: Farmer and Rancher Views on the Agricultural Economy, Part II.” In his opening statement, Boozman expressed gratitude to the witnesses for their participation and highlighted key issues affecting the agricultural sector.

Boozman acknowledged Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins for her strategy announcement addressing avian influenza, praising the Trump administration's response efforts. He emphasized that this virus poses a significant threat to poultry and dairy farmers, impacting the broader food supply chain.

The hearing is part of a series aimed at understanding challenges faced by farmers and rural communities as Congress works on a five-year farm bill. The first session featured major farm groups and row crop producers. This session included specialty crop growers and stakeholders who face unique pressures such as labor costs, import competition, pest challenges, and limited risk management tools.

Livestock, poultry, and dairy producers also participated in the discussion. While some economic improvements have been noted in recent years, high interest rates and production costs continue to challenge margins. Additionally, animal disease threats like avian influenza add uncertainty across species.

Boozman criticized regulatory measures like California’s Proposition 12 for imposing financial burdens on pork producers while increasing costs for consumers. He stressed the importance of improving risk management tools in the upcoming farm bill to support both specialty crop and livestock producers.

Boozman concluded by expressing confidence in committee members' willingness to work collaboratively on passing a new farm bill. He then invited Ranking Member Klobuchar to deliver her opening comments.
