U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, representing Minnesota and serving as the Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, & Forestry, delivered an opening statement at a hearing for Brooke Rollins' nomination as Secretary of Agriculture. The session was held to evaluate Rollins' qualifications and plans for the Department of Agriculture.

Senator Klobuchar expressed gratitude towards Senator Boozman for organizing the hearing and acknowledged the presence of Rollins' family and supporters. She highlighted her long-standing collaboration with Boozman and emphasized their shared commitment to rural America.

Klobuchar paid tribute to former committee leader Senator Stabenow for her 14 years of service, recognizing her contributions in passing Farm Bills and supporting conservation programs. She also welcomed new committee members Senators Schiff, Slotkin, Moran, and Justice.

Addressing Rollins directly, Klobuchar noted previous discussions with her about agricultural issues and expressed interest in hearing more about her future plans. Klobuchar underscored the importance of having a Secretary who understands rural America's challenges, particularly in nutrition and conservation.

She mentioned several ongoing issues affecting American agriculture such as avian flu, dairy industry struggles, natural disasters like flooding and droughts, food scarcity, housing shortages, childcare needs, and healthcare access in rural areas. Klobuchar voiced concerns over some proposed policies from the current administration that might negatively impact rural communities.

Klobuchar stressed the need for leaders within the USDA who value science and research. She committed to advocating for rural America by seeking common ground where possible but standing firm when necessary.

The senator concluded by emphasizing the significance of rural community prosperity in Minnesota through robust safety net programs and workforce availability to drive innovation and job creation.
