U.S. Senators John Boozman and Jim Risch have introduced the Dismantle Iran’s Proxy Act, aiming to designate the Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO). This designation would impose asset freezes and criminal penalties on any person, state, or organization that provides material support to the Houthis.
The legislation seeks to redesignate the Houthis as an FTO and mandates a strategy to weaken their capabilities in the Red Sea. It also calls for an analysis of challenges in delivering humanitarian aid in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
Senator Boozman stated, “The Houthis’ dangerous, destabilizing attacks in the Red Sea continue to threaten American forces, our allies and interests while also disrupting international trade.” He emphasized the importance of restoring President Trump's designation of these Iranian proxies as a foreign terrorist organization.
Senator Risch highlighted the impact of Houthi actions: “After launching nearly daily attacks against American vessels in the Red Sea and Israel, the Houthis have ground international shipping to a standstill." He noted that this bill aims to reinstate President Trump’s decision and apply pressure on Iran to protect U.S. national security.
The legislation is supported by several co-sponsors including Senators Roger Wicker, Tom Cotton, Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, Mike Crapo, Bill Hagerty, Rick Scott, Joni Ernst, Roger Marshall M.D., Bill Cassidy M.D., Marsha Blackburn, Katie Britt, and Mike Rounds.
