Our nation's ports, harbors, and inland waterways play a vital role in transportation and economic growth. They support industries, create jobs, and promote commerce. In Arkansas, these water resources are crucial for agriculture, flood protection efforts, and access to clean drinking water. Congress has consistently recognized the importance of maintaining this infrastructure.

The Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) is a biennial package that authorizes flood control, navigation, and ecosystem restoration projects for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The latest version was recently passed by the 118th Congress and awaits the president's signature.

The Thomas R. Carper Water Resources Development Act of 2024 includes over 200 feasibility studies and 22 new or modified construction projects nationwide. Many dams, levees, and other infrastructure elements are aging and require long-term investments for upgrades.

A member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee expressed satisfaction with securing priorities for Arkansas in this legislation. "In Northwest Arkansas," they noted, "the law will help advance the reallocation study for the Beaver Water District to help serve the water needs of over 400,000 people."

On the eastern side of Arkansas, language was secured to allow a study on expanding Osceola Harbor to manage increased barge traffic supporting Mississippi County's steel industry. Additionally, funding is dedicated to mitigating cost overruns on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System (MKARNS).

The bill also addresses levee safety guidelines that have raised concerns among Arkansans. It includes measures to improve outdoor recreational facilities by reinvesting fees collected at them for maintenance.

These projects aim to strengthen water infrastructure across Arkansas while stimulating economic growth and improving quality of life.

"It is an honor to play an integral role in crafting these momentous policies," said a key figure involved in WRDA 2024.
