Rep. French Hill and Rep. Brendan Boyle, who co-chair the Friends of a Free, Stable, and Democratic Syria Caucus in the House, have released a statement regarding the recent collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria.
"Bashar al-Assad has perpetrated one of the most horrific humanitarian crises of the 21st century," they stated. They highlighted Assad's alliances with Russia and Iran, accusing him of causing significant loss of life and displacement within Syria. "Assad has murdered hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women, and children – and displaced millions more."
The representatives emphasized that this development should allow Syrians to shape their future without repression or sectarian violence. "The end of Assad’s brutal regime must be an opportunity for the Syrian people to decide their own future," they said.
They also called on regional stakeholders to pursue a political resolution aimed at achieving lasting peace in Syria. "We urge all regional stakeholders to commit to a political resolution that not only ends this tragic chapter of Syrian history but also lays the foundation for a lasting peace and a future defined by freedom, justice, and reconciliation."
