U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairman John Boozman opened a legislative hearing on April 1, 2025, to discuss the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act (S.222). The session aimed to assess the proposed legislation's potential impact on children's health by allowing the provision of various types of milk in schools.
In his prepared remarks, Chairman Boozman expressed gratitude to the witnesses for their participation in the hearing. He noted the bill's bipartisan support in Congress, specifically referencing the 330-99 vote in the House during the last Congress.
Highlighting the nation's obesity challenge, Boozman emphasized the critical role of school meal programs in promoting children’s health. He said, “School meal programs are key in addressing children’s health, by providing nutritious, balanced meals to ensure students have the fuel they need to be successful in the classroom.”
He acknowledged the efforts of school food service directors who strive to meet nutrition standards while managing tight budgets and ensuring food consumption by students. Boozman stated, "There's no point in commending ourselves for the nutritious value of school lunches if they wind up in the trashcan."
The hearing gathered various experts, including representatives from the Department of Agriculture, nutrition science experts, and leaders from, school districts, and state levels, to discuss the importance of milk in school nutrition programs. Boozman looked forward to collaborating with his colleagues, listening to expert insights, and focusing on actions that will benefit students.
Following Boozman's address, he invited Ranking Member Klobuchar to present her opening statement.
