Rep. French Hill has introduced the American Detainee Transparency and Recovery Act, aiming to enhance transparency from the State Department regarding American hostages and wrongful detainees. The bill seeks to ensure that Congress receives timely updates on such cases.
"Congress must have transparency from the administration on the status of Americans wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad," stated Rep. Hill. He emphasized the importance of communication for families seeking updates about their loved ones' situations. "We represent detainee families who are still pleading for any news, update on their loved one’s case, or any sign that progress is being made."
Hill acknowledged improvements in transparency over recent years but stressed that further enhancement is necessary between the administration, Congress, and affected families. "I am proud that my legislation will improve this process and bring better transparency for members of Congress and subsequently, detainee families," he added.
The proposed legislation mandates that the State Department provide Congress with essential information about an American wrongfully detained or held hostage within 30 days after a determination by the Secretary of State.
