The Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center (ACNC) is marking its 30th anniversary, celebrating three decades of advancing pediatric research and promoting healthy development for children. The center's contributions are acknowledged as a significant asset to Arkansas and beyond.
The ACNC has a strong partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Research Service. This collaboration focuses on studying the biology of the childhood brain and how diet affects its development. Despite challenges posed by the rural nature of Arkansas, efforts are made to include both urban and rural communities in research studies.
Highlighting the importance of these initiatives, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee stated, "Investing in research on the healthy development of our nation’s children is critical to the future success of our country." The commitment to federal support and funding for such programs was emphasized.
As co-chair of the Senate Hunger Caucus, there has been a focus on supporting children's access to nutritious food. Efforts in Congress have aimed at modernizing USDA summer meals programs and allowing states more flexibility to reach food-insecure children.
The ACNC has also made strides in combating food insecurity. Associate Director Dr. Aline Andres' involvement in the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee highlights efforts to ensure federal nutrition guidance is scientifically grounded.
Research at ACNC extends to maternal nutrition, aiming for better outcomes for families in Arkansas. Ongoing studies underscore the significance of a healthy maternal diet for infants' developmental milestones and future success.
The presence of this research institution in Arkansas is seen as a privilege, with its work translating laboratory findings into practical community benefits. There is an emphasis on continuing support for ACNC's mission to enhance human nutrition research and accessibility.
"We must continue to support ACNC’s efforts," it was stated, underscoring their role in delivering sound guidance and care through consistent successes that are highly valued.
