Arkansas Civil Air Patrol issued the following announcement on Feb. 24.
Neal V. Loving (1916-1998), the first African-American and the first double amputee to be licensed as a racing pilot, served as the commanding officer of Civil Air Patrol’s all-Black Squadron 639-5 in Detroit during World War II. He helped form the squadron after being denied membership in local units because of his race. During his career Loving also achieved distinction as an inventor and aeronautical engineer. #BlackHistoryMonth
