CITY OF MAUMELLE: Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” created by Carter G. Woodson in 1926

Black history month

City of Maumelle issued the following announcement on Feb. 5.

As we honor and share some of those contributions that make our nation what it is today here is today’s #BlackHistoryMonth #FactFriday!

Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,” created by Carter G. Woodson in 1926. Woodson was a noted African American historian, scholar, educator, and publisher. According to NPR, Woodson saw the weeklong celebration as a way to push the teaching of black history in public schools.

The week became a month-long celebration in 1976. February was chosen as Black History Month to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglass. Lincoln was influential in the emancipation of slaves and Douglass was a prominent leader in the fight to end slavery.
