CITY OF MAUMELLE: Keep Your Pets Up To Date With The Rabies Vaccine

Petoftheweek

City of Maumelle issued the following announcement on Aug. 11.

Hey Maumelle, the City along with Maumelle Animal Services recognize that our resident's pets are like family, and it's so important to keep them safe and protected. Therefore, we would like to remind citizens that it is important to keep your pets up to date with the rabies vaccine.

On Saturday, August 7, 2021, Maumelle Animal Services received a phone call about capturing a bat in Maumelle. Animal Control Officers took the bat in and humanely euthanized it. On Monday it was taken to the Arkansas Department of Health to be tested for the rabies virus. Late Tuesday afternoon, we received a call from the Department of Health notifying us that the bat tested Positive for the rabies virus. In this case, there was no human or animal contact with this bat, so the incident is likely to be isolated.

In Arkansas, bats and skunks are the highest carriers of the rabies virus. If you have a bat on your patio, porch, or in your home please let the professionals handle the situation by contacting Maumelle Animal Services at 501-851-6219 or 501-851-1337 for after-hour emergencies.
