Van Compton, former head coach of the Little Rock Trojans women’s volleyball team, will be formally inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame on Friday at Oaklawn in Hot Springs. The announcement comes after Compton retired from coaching following the 2025 season, concluding a nearly four-decade-long career.

Compton’s induction highlights her significant contributions to both Little Rock Athletics and women’s sports in Arkansas. Her tenure included building one of the region’s most successful volleyball programs and mentoring generations of student-athletes.

“It means more than I can fully put into words,” Compton said. “It’s the ultimate accolade. To me, it’s the highest honor in coaching — to be selected into your state’s Hall of Fame.” She added that being included with top names in Arkansas sports history is special for her personally and important for representing Little Rock Athletics: “This wouldn’t be possible without my players and staff over the years.”

During her time as head coach, Compton reached several milestones including a 603-527 record at Little Rock and an overall mark of 675-607 across her career. Under her leadership, teams won four Sun Belt regular-season titles, five Sun Belt Tournament championships, and made five NCAA Tournament appearances. The pinnacle came during the 2014 season when Little Rock finished with a school-record 30-5 record, went undefeated in conference play, achieved its first NCAA Tournament win against Kansas, and earned its first Top-25 ranking.

Compton said that while wins are important, she values most “the lives you’ve touched.” She emphasized helping young people grow beyond athletics: “People may forget scores and championships, but they never forget people.” She also reflected on creating opportunities for student-athletes during times when such chances were limited: “If you could take someone from a difficult situation and give them a chance at a college education, you could change their life.”

Her influence extended internationally by recruiting athletes from war-torn regions like Bosnia in the 1990s. Looking back on changes since she began coaching in an era with fewer opportunities for women athletes due to Title IX developments and other reforms over time, Compton said: “It was a man’s world when I started… I’ve seen that evolve completely.”

From driving vans early in her career to leading one of Arkansas’ premier programs academically and athletically at Little Rock University since joining as basketball coach before taking over volleyball duties in 1988—her journey has been marked by growth both personal and institutional.

As she prepares for induction into the Hall of Fame alongside other notable figures from state sports history this week—Compton concludes: “In the end it’s about impact you made on people’s lives.”
