One of the responsibilities of representing Arkansas in the U.S. Senate is nominating students to the nation’s military service academies. These include the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each institution has its own selection process, but all require a nomination from a U.S. Representative, Senator, or the Vice President.
Senator John Boozman shared advice for students interested in this path: “After participating in this process for many years, I am happy to encourage students who are considering this path with insights into the application process.”
He emphasized starting early: “First, start early. Applying to the academies is not the same as applying to a traditional college or university. You will need academic records, recommendations, medical records, fitness tests and other requests that are unique to entry at a military school.”
Students are encouraged to begin reviewing requirements during their junior year of high school and to open an application file with any academy they are interested in. Participating in week-long summer programs hosted by each academy between junior and senior year can help demonstrate commitment and assist students in deciding if academy life suits them.
For seniors just learning about these opportunities, Senator Boozman reassured them: “If you are already a senior and are just learning about these opportunities, rest assured there is still time to apply. You’ll want to get started right away and keep an eye on the upcoming deadlines for nomination requests.”
Applying for nominations from both Senators and one Representative increases chances due to limited slots per office: “It is strongly recommended you request nominations from each office that serves you – two Senators and one Representative – to give you the best chance of success,” Boozman said.
The deadline for applying for a nomination from Senator Boozman’s office is November 1; applications can be found on his website.
Senator Boozman also advised considering an application for a national ROTC scholarship at the same time as academy applications since much of the required information overlaps.
“I am looking forward to meeting this year’s applicants from Arkansas and doing all I can to support their willingness to become military leaders in our nation,” he stated.
