U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Chairman John Boozman convened a hearing to discuss the nominations of Judge Stephen Vaden and Tyler Clarkson for key roles at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The nominees are being considered for the positions of Deputy Secretary and General Counsel, respectively.

During the hearing, Boozman extended his welcome and congratulations to both nominees. He noted the challenges faced by rural America, particularly in the current difficult economic conditions impacting farmers and ranchers.

Boozman commented on ongoing issues like tariffs imposed by the President. “While the President has imposed tariffs designed to address unfair practices and market manipulation by our trading partners to level the playing field, it remains to be seen how these will impact agriculture, causing much unease.”

Economic assistance efforts by the USDA were also mentioned, with Boozman stating that the implementation of the Emergency Commodity Assistance Program is being monitored closely to ensure alignment with congressional intent.

Boozman expressed confidence in the nominees, highlighting their backgrounds in law and experience with the USDA. He noted that these qualities make Judge Vaden and Mr. Clarkson well-suited for their respective roles. “Judge Vaden, whose family has farmed in Tennessee and Kentucky since the 1800s, has a legal background that spans the private sector, USDA, and the federal bench. His understanding of agriculture, the law, and USDA will serve him well as he is tasked with managing the day-to-day operations of the department.”

Mr. Clarkson’s past roles at the USDA, including Deputy General Counsel and Acting General Counsel, were acknowledged as preparatory for his nomination to General Counsel. According to Boozman, “As General Counsel, Mr. Clarkson will be tasked with providing legal advice to Secretary Rollins and all other officials and agencies at USDA.”

In closing, Boozman emphasized the importance of the roles these nominees are expected to fill, stating, “While the roles of Deputy Secretary and General Counsel aren’t always public facing, they are essential in ensuring the Department remains focused on its mission and in compliance with laws and regulations.” He expressed gratitude for their willingness to serve and anticipated their testimonies and responses to queries.
