As the summer travel season approaches, Arkansans are reminded of an important upcoming travel requirement. As of May 7, 2025, domestic flight travelers in the United States must present a “REAL ID” compliant identification or another acceptable form of ID. This requirement comes after the Department of Homeland Security has extended the deadline multiple times since the REAL ID Act of 2005, enacted in response to the 9/11 Commission’s findings.
The REAL ID Act aims to enhance protection against identity fraud by implementing a nationwide secure identification standard. REAL IDs include advanced security features to deter counterfeiting and duplication. During the application for a REAL ID, individuals must provide additional documents to prove identity, citizenship, and residence.
To obtain a REAL ID in Arkansas, residents must make an appointment at an Arkansas Department of Finance & Administration state Revenue Office. Required documentation includes proof of legal residence (such as a U.S. birth certificate or Passport), proof of identity (like a driver’s license or military ID), proof of Social Security Number (such as a Social Security card or W-2 form), and proof of residency (like utility bills or bank statements).
If documents are unavailable, residents should contact the appropriate agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, for replacements. Assistance is available from federal offices for any issues encountered with federal agencies.
Travel planning should account for the essential requirement of presenting a REAL ID or acceptable identification when boarding flights. Scheduling appointments and gathering necessary documents in advance is advised to avoid potential travel disruptions.
“All indications point to the May 7 deadline of this year to be fully enforced and final.” Emphasizing the importance of timely compliance, the press release states that starting early is crucial to ensuring that travel plans are not disrupted.
