Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show the country’s older adult population continues to rise as numbers among younger age groups decrease. The population age 65 and older saw a 13% increase between 2020 and 2024, while the under-18 population fell by 1.7%. The older adult population in the United States has expanded sharply over the last 100 years, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study reports that nearly half of older adults, about 28 million individuals, could need long-term services and support. More than one third of this group may end up requiring nursing home care, according to the projections.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
