Health care remains a challenge in rural areas, with 1.3 million Arkansans—about 45 percent of the state’s population—living outside urban or suburban communities. Across the United States, millions face similar issues accessing health services.

Arkansas will receive over $208 million through the Rural Health Transformation Program in 2026, which aims to improve outcomes, quality, and access for rural patients and providers. The program is part of the Working Families Tax Cuts legislation that U.S. Senator John Boozman supported and helped pass into law last year.

Senator Boozman stated, “The recent announcement that Arkansas will receive more than $208 million through the Rural Health Transformation Program in 2026 will make a big difference.” He added, “This program was established through the Working Families Tax Cuts, legislation I supported and helped pass into law last year. Designed to strengthen rural healthcare systems with a specific focus on outcomes, quality and access, my Republican colleagues and I were pleased to champion this commonsense effort to address the substantial challenges facing patients and providers in rural areas.”

The initiative includes a nationwide investment of $50 billion in rural health care. All fifty states applied for funding and received support. Arkansas’s allocation places it among the top twenty states for funding received.

Under Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ leadership, Arkansas will use these funds for several programs: The Healthy Eating, Active Recreation, and Transformation (HEART) program focuses on nutrition and physical activity; Promoting Access, Coordination, and Transformation (PACT) works to increase efficiency and data sharing for specialty care; Recruitment, Innovation, Skills, and Education for Arkansas (RISE AR) supports workforce development; Telehealth, Health Monitoring, and Response Innovation for Vital Expansion (THRIVE) expands telehealth services.

“I look forward to seeing these investments support health care delivery, modernize tools and infrastructure, and enhance approaches to sustain health outcomes,” Boozman said. “As a former healthcare provider, I know firsthand how important it is to ensure quality care is available close to home. I have been proud to work across the aisle on solutions that improve the system for both patients and providers. This program is another significant step toward that goal.”

Boozman emphasized broader national needs: “Across the nation, more than 66 million Americans reside in areas defined as rural. We must ensure rural communities are thriving… This monumental investment in rural health will help meet clear needs and transform the way rural Arkansans receive lifesaving care.”

Senator Boozman represents Arkansas in Congress as its senior senator and leads its congressional delegation. His background includes service on committees such as Appropriations; Veterans’ Affairs; Environment & Public Works; Rules & Administration according to his official website. Before entering politics he practiced optometry after earning his degree from Southern College of Optometry and co-founded an eye care business. He also developed a low vision program at Arkansas School for the Blind as noted online.

Boozman’s legislative work has included expanding care for women veterans and updating GI Bill provisions. He maintains district offices across several Arkansas cities including Little Rock and Fort Smith to assist constituents.
