Arkansas has taken a significant step forward in improving access to oral health care with the opening of its first dental school. The Lyon College School of Dental Medicine, located in Little Rock, has welcomed its inaugural class of 80 students. This development aims to address the shortage of dental providers in the state and enhance oral health education.
The establishment of this dental school comes after it received accreditation earlier this year. Batesville’s Lyon College is behind this initiative, which seeks to provide affordable and quality oral health care. The school’s curriculum focuses on both education and community care, offering students hands-on clinical experience.
According to America’s Health Rankings 2024 Annual Report, only 55.6 percent of adult Arkansans visited a dentist last year. In contrast, 69.2 percent of high school students reported visiting a dentist during the same period. A report by the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement highlighted that eleven counties experienced a shortage of dental providers in 2019.
Congress recently passed legislation that provided $15 million in funding for Lyon’s dental school. This investment aims to train and retain health professionals who will likely serve in Arkansas throughout their careers.
The inaugural class includes 43 percent Natural State natives from diverse communities such as Bentonville, Jonesboro, McGehee, Atkins, and Ozark. Among them are seventeen first-generation college students. The new facilities promise state-of-the-art technology to support their education.
The hope is that this initiative will inspire more young individuals to pursue careers in dentistry and contribute positively to Arkansas’s healthcare landscape.
